Attendance Policy

Attendance:

The school district must know which students are present and in its care each day.  Careful attendance in homeroom and every class will be taken.  Students must be in attendance on the day of any school-sponsored, evening activity in order to participate.  However, the administration reserves the right to consider special circumstances.

If a student is absent or truant from school, their parents or guardians assume the resposibility for their whereabouts.  The school district must obtain an excuse from the parents or guardians and signed by them stating: (1) the student's name, (2) dates and days absent from school, and (3) the reason for absence.  When returning to school following a period of absence of one or more days, a student must bring in an excuse to the school nurse before going to homeroom.  These written excuses are kept on file for three (3) years and used as documentary evidence by the school when attendance records are audited by the State Education Department for State Aid purposes and, if necessary, in court proceedings.  A telephone message from a parent or guardian designating their reason for absence does not take the place of a written note.  The school nurse will call a parent or guardian if there is no written excuse within 48 hours and a conference may be required.  The following reasons for student absences from schools are recognized excused:

 1.  Personal illness

2.  Illness or death in the family

3.  Impassable roads or whether making travel unsafe

4.  Religious observance

5.  Medical appointment

6.  Quarantine

7.  Required court appearance

Any other absence (family vacation, hunting, babysitting, hair cut, oversleeping) is considered unexcused.  However, the administration reserves the right to consider special circumstances.

PARENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL (555-1212) BY 8:15AM IF THEIR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT THAT DAY OR MORE THAN ONE DAY.
